Design Competition Entry: Van Alen Institute Better Bin design competition 
 
After doing extensive research into what garbage bins are, and what they can be. My partner and I studied manufacturing techniques, material properties, operational ergonomics and user response to develop a deeper understanding of trash bins. We tasked ourselves with improving upon existing material use and manufacturin methodologies in a way that will not compromise operational ergonomics or user behavior.

Design Brief
The bin is designed to specifically address each of the issues identified in the design brief.

A. QUALITY OF LIFE AND AESTHETICS
Is designed to be visually attractive and to enhance the aesthetics of every street corner, park or playground.

B. PROPER USE
Lids are designed to direct proper use by the use of angles, right-sized apertures, and reinforcing messages.

C. ACCESSIBILITY
Designed to be used by persons with disabilities in its height, bold messaging and potential for braille.

D. SUSTAINABILITY AND STEWARDSHIP
Is specified to be made from recycled aluminum, that can be in turn recycled, and painted with an environmentally friendly process. It is a sustainable design.

E. SERVICING
The bins are lightweight, stack-able and have built in handles to make them easy to lift. The hinged lid makes them easy to empty.

F. COST, DURABILITY, AND EASE OF MAINTENANCE
Sheet aluminum, while more expensive than steel, is a relatively inexpensive yet durable material. Powder coat allows for simple water and soap cleaning.

G. SECURITY
The bin’s transparency offers a greater degree of security.
Design Requirements

1. SIZE & DIMENSIONS
Under the specified size + dimensions and made for use with a 40 gallon bag or recycled polymer liner.

2. PLACEMENT & STABILITY
Has a stable base and uses perforations and cut-aways to address wind without compromising pest resistance.

3. DRAINAGE
The base is raised and perforated to allow water to drain out. Perforations are small to keep out rodents.

4. DURABILITY & DESIGN
The proposed fabrication materials are the same used to make jet fighter aircraft - they’re used on existing bins  and proven to be durable in the field.

5. USABILITY AND ERGONOMICS
Designed to have multiple redundant features to make them easy to operate and use. Including hand grabs, a bag tuck, stack-ability, and and a hinged lid.

6. BRANDING & MESSAGING
Branded and allow for messaging around the edge and top of the lid. Additionally, side perforations allow vinyl graphics to be attached to the bins over a span of 24”.

7. EASE OF USE
The hinged lid allows the internal bag to be easily lifted out, or if needed, the bin can be tilted for bag removal without lifting.
